Local man sped in-line to his goal: DiSanza helped make possible Chubbuck’s new roller hockey rink
By Debbie Bryce
Journal Writer
CHUBBUCK – Jim DiSanza, chairman of the Communication and Rhetorical Studies Department at Idaho State University in Pocatello, said he’s known by the sobriquet “Mr. Hockey.â€
I grew up in Cleveland and I’ve been playing since I was 10,âm he said. The speed appeals to me – in-line is so fast.
In fact, DiSanza said for the past two years, in-line hockey has been his life.
DiSanza, who’s secretary of the Chubbuck-Pocatello Hockey Association, and other board members spearheaded efforts to build a year-round roller hockey rink at Capell Park in Chubbuck.
The association’s previous venue was being demolished to make room for Lowes. The new rink opened Tuesday and DiSanza said more than 20 kids turned out to test the rink’s concrete surface. Equipment is available at the rink on Tuesday and Thursdays when the association puts on a series of organized skirmishes.
The group hopes to have organized league play next year.
DiSanza and wife Nancy have been married 18 years and have two children, Alexis, !6, and Jake, 13. Both play in-line hockey, and both share his enthusiasm for the sport and the new rink, he said.
The hockey association currently has $200,000 set aside to enclose the hockey rink and the group recently received a $10,000 grant for the project.
DiSanza said skating is a great way to get active and get children off the computer and outdoors.
It doesn’t matter the size of the kid, with in-line skating they can compete evenly, he said.
Chubbuck site draws good crowds
The Chubbuck-Pocatello Hockey Association reports that its new in-line venue is open and turnout at organized skirmishes have been good.
Secretary Jim DiSanza said 20 to 30 kids came out for the rink’s opening last week.
Located at Capell Park in Chubbuck, the hockey rink will eventually be enclosed, he said.
The group has $200,000 in seed money for the project, which DiSanza estimates will cost twice that amount.
The skating rink is open year-round and it’s free to the public.
Hockey equipment is also available free of charge.
They just need to show up and want to play, DiSanza said.
The group meets every Tuesday and Thursday – beginners and children 12 and under play at 6:30 p.m. and adults and children older than 12 meet at 7:45 p.m.
DiSanza said the association hopes to sponsor league play next spring. For more information about the Chubbuck- Pocatello Hockey Association, call DiSanza at (208) 244-1367.
